Spirituality and History Programming
Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month, once said, “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” As a trained historian, I believe that I have a duty to ensure that people do not lose the inspiration that comes from studying biographies and history. History is important to our spiritual development, and I’d like to help you navigate historical subjects carefully and compassionately. To that end, I offer three distinct programs for individuals and groups.
Spiritual Leaders and Social Change Courses
This 4-week intensive course surveys select individuals' lives, ministries, activism, and writing. The class will critically inspect their theological and spiritual foundations and formation, pivotal points in their spiritual and ethical development, and their positive contributions to social change in the U.S. and abroad. Finally, the course will examine the historical significance of that person’s life and work. Courses are available on Howard Thurman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Septima Clark, Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Pauli Murray, Bayard Rustin, and others. These courses will run on weekday evenings or on Saturday mornings for 3 hours and are limited to 12 participants. The cost is $250 per course.
Writing Your Spiritual Autobiography Course
This course encourages you to dig deeper into the triumphs and tragedies of your life to consider how they shaped and reshaped your belief systems. In addition to reading some notable autobiographical essays together, you can produce your own essay and receive feedback from published writers and editors. The class will run on weekday evenings or on Saturday mornings for 3 hours and is limited to 12 participants. The cost is $300.
